Report | PDF Report | Media Location Information and History The Royal British Legion Club in Enfield has been a Legion Club since the 70’s. Before then it was an active Fire Station. Reports of activity and even eye-witness reports seem to date back for this location to the mid seventies, around the same time that the Legion took over the old Fire Station and converted it into a club. The most prominent of these accounts seems in the past refer to a spirit nicknamed ‘Fred’ by the staff of the time. This activity historically and as accounted by the current staff members seems to be centered on what seems like poltergeist type activity. Newspaper articles (featured below) contain the full accounts from the staff at the time of the interview, detailing their experiences at the club. Those reports show many similarities to the reports ISP received from the current staff. This location has reports of objects being moved. Glasses have been moved and broken, the barrow used for collecting broken bottles was found moved across a room. Various sounds have been heard in different places around the location. Staff and members alike have reported feeling the presence of something unknown. Also, on more than one occasion there has been a report of a figure being seen, perhaps of a man or woman. However, it would seem that most of the reports make the upstairs bar area the more active position at the location. In a 1976 article by John Fennelly, ‘A Christmas Ghost Story at the Old Fire Station’, John speaks with a member of staff called Wilf Jones, accounting his various experiences at the location. Wilf describes an abundance of activity including the breakage of glasses, movement of objects, sounds and even the time he saw the spirit in what was known as the spirit cellar. Within the same article Wilf’s wife Eileen also recounts her experiences upstairs and more precisely when something touched her shoulder in the kitchen. Before the overnight investigation took place Liz visited the Legion to check the place out and get a feel for it. More importantly to ask the staff some questions and locate those all important ‘hotspots’. One of the staff (Maria) reported some of the more recent activity. She told Liz how whilst putting something in the oven, in the upstairs kitchen, she noticed the grill racks were missing. She turned and went to the other side of the kitchen and heard something fall. She turned around; the wooden plinth at the bottom of the oven unit had come off and was across the room. Inside the tiny space were the missing grill racks. Nobody owned up to putting them there. Maria also went on to explain that whilst holding a meeting they heard people moving around and saw someone in the bar area, but all people were in the meeting. More importantly, Maria believes that she saw someone come out of the lift and walk along the corridor, on the CCTV camera screen. However, there was no one upstairs at the time. This footage has been lost though, possibly recorded over by the automated CCTV system.
